Painting of Icarus

WINGS OF ICARUS

Icarus

The story of Icarus is one of triumph yet failure. Icarus & his father Daedalus, a great inventor and the creator of labyrinth, were imprisoned by King Minos. Daedalus, wishing a better life for his son, created a contraption inspired by the wings of a bird. He used feathers, wood and candle wax to create large wings, allowing them to fly away from the tower. Icarus was given one simple instruction, fly too close to the Sun & the wax will melt, but fly too close to the sea and the feathers will become too damp to fly. They both set off, flapping their wings, in a moment of triumph as they escaped imprisonment. However Icarus, overwhelmed by the freedom and filled with a sense of power, flew closer to the sun. The wax melted, the feathers dissipated and Icarus dropped to his death in the sea.

EDITION 2 features the wings of Icarus to signify innovation and freedom. However, the lesson Icarus' fortune teaches us is one of humility. In life, there is ample opportunity to rise, overcome obstacles and triumph, but without humility, downfall is imminent.
