EDITION 1: Baroque Art
Baroque Art flowered during the period of 1590 - 1720. A time when the Catholic Church was facing increased criticism from the Protestant reformation. The Catholic church needed to reassert itself, especially among the large populations who were illiterate and couldn’t read the bible or understand its meaning. Baroque started as a hyper-realistic and dramatic art form which depicted key elements of Catholic Dogma, either directly in Biblical works or indirectly in Mythological compositions. It was designed to create Spectacle and Illusion using flowing curves and larger than life characters, leaving behind the ultra-realistic style of the renaissance.
Although its origins link back to the catholic church, baroque art was used in protestant parts of Europe to signify Wealth and Power. Its translation into architecture lead to the creation of spectacular interiors which manipulated light and shade to create a theatrical atmosphere. Baroque Art and Architecture spread throughout Europe and was the first to impact large portions of the world including Africa, Asia & the America’s. It became synonymous with Luxury, Drama & Ornate detail.
